Check permission before cord size

Use an extension cord only if the instructions for your exact electric pressure washer permit it, and then follow all stated conditions. Some manuals prohibit one. An outdoor rating or a heavier cord does not create an exception to that prohibition.

Two manuals give different answers

Kärcher's U.S. support page for the K 2 Power Control, order 1.673-609.0, retains operating instructions although the product is no longer in its current range. The linked April 2023 manual prohibits extension-cord use. This is an example for existing owners, not a current-model buying recommendation.

The manual linked from SIMPSON's CM60976(-S) page takes a different approach. Its March 2026 revision says extension cords are not recommended, then gives conditions if one is required. Those include an outdoor-rated three-prong cord, stated length and conductor-size limits, uncoiling during use and an intact grounding pin. Those conditions belong to that manual; they are not a specification for every washer.

Find the instructions that match your machine

Our practical approach: record the complete model and serial number, then use the manufacturer's support page for the country where the washer was supplied. Check the manual's applicability before planning the power connection.

If the document is missing, unclear or conflicts with other advice, ask the manufacturer to identify the applicable instructions and confirm the proposed setup before use. Do not borrow another model's cord, plug or power-supply requirements.

Cord permission does not replace electrical precautions

CDC advises testing the GFCI before use and keeping electrical connections away from standing water and runoff. It warns against cutting or splicing cords and removing grounding prongs. These precautions do not mean adding a grounding prong to a double-insulated machine such as the cited K 2.

The K 2 manual says not to operate after a failed GFCI test. CDC recommends a qualified electrician check the pressure washer after it trips a circuit breaker. Stop for the appropriate help rather than modifying connections to keep working.
