First, identify the pump

Some pressure-washer pumps need oil changes; others are sealed and require no owner oil service. Check the manual for your exact machine and pump before opening a plug or buying oil.

Generac describes the axial-cam pumps covered by its residential support page as factory-lubricated and sealed. It directs owners to verify their pump in the manual or specification sheet. Its separate triplex-pump guidance describes scheduled oil servicing. Those examples do not establish that every axial pump is sealed or that every triplex pump follows the same schedule.

Engine oil and pump oil are separate

On a gas pressure washer, an instruction to change engine oil does not automatically mean changing pump oil. Generac's maintenance page explicitly separates engine servicing from its warning against oil maintenance on the sealed pumps it describes.

A pump that needs no owner oil changes does not make the whole machine maintenance-free. The same guidance calls for other checks, including the inlet screen, high-pressure hose and spray gun. Use the machine's own maintenance schedule.

There is no universal pump-oil schedule

The difference is substantial: Cat Pumps' oil guidance gives an initial 50-hour change, followed by changes every 500 hours. Generac's triplex support article specifies changes every 50 hours for the equipment it covers. These are separate manufacturer examples, not interchangeable schedules.

Oil selection also depends on the equipment. Cat Pumps specifies its own ISO 68 high-pressure pump oil and says it no longer recommends alternatives. Generac distinguishes oil choices by model and drive arrangement. A viscosity label or another owner's recommendation cannot settle compatibility for your machine.

Keep a simple service record

Our suggested record lists the machine and pump identification, applicable manual, specified oil and capacity, first and repeat service intervals, and the date and operating hours of completed work. Keep engine and pump entries separate.

If the pump has been replaced, identify the installed component before relying on the original machine's schedule. If instructions are missing, unclear or conflicting, ask the manufacturer or authorized service provider to resolve them. Follow that equipment's safety and servicing instructions; this comparison is not a draining or filling procedure.
